VIP1710 – AirPrint Emulator

Before i depart to Bremen for two weeks i gonna try to use my insufficient Linux skills, bundled with insufficient embedded hacking skills in order to make my good ol’ pal “Vip1710″ be a networking printer box that runs my hack to make it usable with iOS devices. The problem here is that i have a Mipsel System here and no idea how to build that… but it should be possible, and if it is i have a printer server here which can not only share multiple printers in the network but also act as an AirPrint Server for the iDevices in our house… (But honestly, WHY do I do that? I dont like these devices anyway..)

IPad: How to print with every(?) printer

Ok, since my stepfather bough an Ipad, as did my brother, it was time for me criticising it – and improving it as well.
One thing said at the beginning: You dont need to jailbreak your Ipad, the way to get you pad printing is simple and straight forward. Unfortunately you will need a computer running some software (free).. but hey, at least you dont have to buy a new printer ,0)

Ok, so what will you need?

* CUPS – www.cups.org
* AVAHI – www.avahi.org
* (Obviously Linux)

The first is a printer server for linux, the second an open source implementation of Zeroconf.
Why that? Well, it seems that AirPrint is just a shiny name, in the end it seems just to be some Zeroconf – or at least Zeroconf compatible protocol.. anyhow, the better for us, isnt it?

Alright, lets get our stuff started. In my case i used a Debian Lenny VM on a Windows 7 Host – but i guess one could be using any Linux in Standalone or VM environment.
Please install both software via APT, Yum or whatever package manager you like, i especially recommend building them from sources, but that is you choice. Once installed navigate to localhost:631 and install the printer you want to use with your Ipad – the menues are straight forward and you shouldnt run into any problems here…
Now for the tricky part. As the Ipad (or rather the iOS) expects a certain kind of printer in the network we have to give it the impression that you CUPS enabled printer is an AirPrint machine. For that we have to create a file in “/etc/avahi/services” – the file is called “playprinter.service”. The content should be like this:

Wherever you see some #bla# you can enter your own stuff except for the parts where it says /printer/… there you have to enter the name of your Printer as it reads in your Control Panel Url!

New project: An Arduino Clone

Ok, today I will start to do one of things every Arduino developer does at least once till he dies: Making his own Arduino clone.

For this matter i chose to do a “normal” Arduino clone, like Freeduino and sorts with some bits and bilts i like more than existing on the regular plattform.
I will start out building a small ISP burner to get some stuff prepared i want to test later. My goal, after all, will be to have a clone that runs totally on DIL parts – no need for SMT parts, even with using USB.

So far i will divide the project into the following steps:
1) Building an ISP (using mega-ISP)
2) Burning a modified VUSB Firmware on an mega168
3) Making a breadboard Arduino using the parts i have here
4) If 3 passes the tests making schematics available for it with downloadable firmware and maybe prototyping a PCB for it.

Meine Arbeit in Ahlat ist (vorerst) beendet.. jedenfalls meine Arbeit bei Paleovan ist es für das erste – dementsprechend befinde ich mich nun beim letzten Teil meines Aufenthalts in Anatolien, meiner Diplomkartierung. Hierbei werde ich in Begleitung den See umfahren und Aufschlüsse suchen um damit ein zusammenhängendes geologisches Bild des Vansees zu erstellen..

Now that the drilling cmpaign has ended for me i am now in Van waiting for my mapping campaign to start. For this i will look for outcrops all over the lake Van area in order to build a quite complete picture of the Van areas quarternary geology. But more about that tomorrow!

Es hat nun etwas länger gedauert mit dem letzten Lebenszeichen und insofern werde ich jetzt mal ein wenig nachholen, was ich zuletzt etwas vernachlässigt habe und jetzt mal ein größeres Update schreiben. Zur Zeit ist es 7:35am GMT+2 und ich warte darauf, dass es weiter geht. Zuletzt habe ich von Windproblemen gesprochen und, dass wir auf 24h Schichten umsteigen mussten – diese zeiten sind zumindest rum. Seit zwei Tagen nun fahren wir wieder 12h Schichten, leider ist das auch das beste was ich zu berichten habe. Während unserer 24h Schichten hatten wir meist nur kleine Zeitfenster, in denen wir arbeiten konnten und zuletzt sogar Schichten komplett ohne Core recovery – was darin endete, dass unser Drillpipe sich mit den Wellen in der Tiefe mitbewegen und verstopfen konnte. Nach einem Tag Arbeit haben wir es geschafft das Rohr freizuschlagen nur um dann das Tool unter Sediment begraben zu verlieren und das Loch zu verlassen. Nach einigen wenigen Kernen und in einem neuen Bohrloch waren wir wieder in der Tiefe, die uns zuletzt das Loch gekostet hat und was ist passiert? Das Tool wurde vergraben und zuletz thaben wir 24h vergeblich versucht es herauszufischen und einen weiteren Korken aus dem Loch herauszulösen – mit dem Ergebnis, dass vergangene Nacht wieder herausgezogen wurde und wir nun die 2. Bohrung am Ahlat Ridge beginnen werden um überlappende kerne für zumindest die ersten 130m zu bekommen. Für mich selbst endet dieses Kapitel leider auch bald – am Wochenende werde ich von Ahlat nach Van umziehen um dort mit meiner Diplomkartierung zu beginnen, welche etwa 4 Wochen in Anspruch nehmen wird. Heute im laufe des Tages, solange ich noch auf Standby bin, werde ich ein wenig an meinem Kartierzeug arbeiten um Ziele und Deadlines festzulegen – mit dem vor mir liegenden Berg an Arbeit muss ich eine gewisse Struktur hineinbringen.. aber das wird scon klappen.. irgendwie ,0) Also, mit einem weinenden und einem lachenden Auge sage ich Tschüss zum PaleoVan Projekt. Es war eine sehr interessante und lehrreiche Zeit hier und ich will keine Minute hier missen, aber ich bin auch froh diesen Ort verlassen zu können um nun etwas Abwechslung zu haben. Manchmal kann auch eine schöne Zeit lang werden :0) Mein nächster Eintrag also, insofern sich hier nichts weltbewegendes ereignet wird aus Van kommen, vom letzten Teil meiner Reise…

Its been a while since i gave a last sign of being alive and so i gonna do it now a bit more in detail. Currently it is 7:35am GMT+2 and i am on Standby, eager to start my last shift. In my last post i wrote about the problems we had with wind and waves and i am happy to say that we have made through this period and switched back from 24h shifts to 12h shifts, yet unfortunately that was all the good news. While we were still on the 24h shifts we had long times when we could do nothing due to wind and waves and so the pipe, going up and down as well, had time to clot up and simply to not work anymore. We used almost 12hrs to free it from the clottet up material just to get the information that the shift after us buried the tool under sedimt: Therefore a trip-out was neccessary. After the trip in we were able to recover another two cores jsut to be followed by the night shift buriing the tool under sediment again. Whe we went to the platform yesterday we heard, en route, that night shift was able to recover the tool but was stuck with a clottet up pipe again, therefore we tried for the better part of the day to remove that again yet decided finally to trip out again and start paralel coring of the first 130m of Ahlat Ridge.. For myself this chapter is almost finished. I will join today my very last shift (after my last shift yesterday) and start my mapping stuff at the weekend, lasting for another 4 Weeks there. Hence my next post will come, if nothing special happens, from Van..

Where the winds blow…

Seit einigen Tagen haben wir verstärkt probleme mit dem Wind. Zum Abend hin wird es hier immer stürmiger, was dazu führt, dass wir auch immer höhere Wellen bekommen, zwingt uns dazu unsere Arbeitsschichten ein wenig abzuändern. Derzeit fahren wir 24h Schichten – was schlimmer klingt als es ist. Insofern nicht wundern, wenn ich mich zu anderen Zeitpunkten melde als sonst.

Heute hatten wir einen etwas… anderen Tag. Bereits heute Morgen beim Aufstehen war klar, dass alles etwas komplizierter werden würde, da man im Zimmer die Wellen gegen das Ufer klatschen hören konnte. Die Ausfahrt aus dem Hafen war leider, wie auch der restliche Weg, etwas huBBelig – was sich so weit steigerte, dass man mehrfach das Gefühl bekam, dass das Schiff hätte umkippen können..
Auf der Barge angekommen, war bereits die rede davon bei gleichartigem Wetter auf eine abholung zu verzichten und direkt 24h zu bleiben, länger auch falls nötig.
Bis zum Mittag hat sich das Wetter so weit gebessert, dass Arbeiten möglich war, aber genauso wie es besser wurde tagsüber wurde es zum Abend hin wieder schlechter… und es passierte, was passieren musste: Es wurde entschieden uns nicht mit dem Uniboot abzuholen.
Am Rande eine anmerkung, die zum Tage, aber nicht zu den Abläufen gehört: Ich bin hier generell für alles Verantwortlich, wegdriftende Ankerplattformen, schlechtes Wetter, versinkende Ankerseile, abreißende Bohrgeräte, leere Schüsse, .. . nunja, alles mögliche eben ;0)
Heute aber habe ich es geschafft wirklich mal einen grßen Fehler zu begehen: ich habe einen Eimer ins Wasser fallen lassen….. das war natürlich für die Anwesenden eine Steilvorlage.
Nunja, nach einigen Stunden, und bereits ersten Gesprächen darüber Crewmitglieder zu verspeisen, bekamen wir die Mitteilung, dass die Militärpolizei uns abholen würde… was sie dann auch getan. Mit Maschinengewehr am Bug kam es auf uns zugefahren und wir durften dann auf das Militärboot, womit wir dann schnell und sicher nach hause gefahren wurde. Es sah auch ganz danach aus, dass die Soldaten ebensoviel Spaß an der Sache hatten wir wir – nur gut, dass keiner mein Ikamet (meine fehlerhafte Aufenthaltserlaubnis) haben wollte ,0)
Nachdem wir dann irgendwann in Ahlat ankamen gab es natürlich den obligatorischen Tee und endlich sah man mal einen Hund – womit ein mögliches Maskottchen für Paleovan gefunden worden war.. leider haben wir es nicht behalten.

PS: Ironie: Es gab die Befürchtung, dass die Motoren des Unibootes hätten ausfallen können und wir bei dem Wetter massivste Probleme bekommen könnten – am Jandarmaschiff WAR der Motor dann kurz ausgefallen…

Today was a slightly different day… Already after waking up one could hear the waves crashing against the shore, therefore the departure from the harbor was quite a shakey thing, just being getting worse the farther we came away from the shore ending with different situations where one thought the ship would turn upside down any moment. When we reached the barge there was alredy clear that we wont get brought home if the weather conditions wouldnt change.
As it had to happen the weather didnt turn out towards the better and hence we were told to stay on the barge. After talking about canibalsim (It was still early afternoon!) we got the message that the military would pick us up and bring us home.
With a machine gun on the front of the boat they came towards us and after we got on bboard we were brought to ahlat in quite a short time and got the obligatory cup of tea – and found a mascot for the drilling operations, yet we couldnt keep it…

PS: Irony: There was the problem that the universitys motors might break and that we then would be stranded under bad weather conditions – yet the MP boats motors died for a short time…
